A Hole by Hole guide for The Kingfisher at Mannings
Heath Golf Club in Horsham
Prepare yourself before even stepping foot
on the 1st tee – get tips from the pro for each hole and
see your game improve (possibly) as a result.
This course is a great even balance of par 3, par 4 and par 5
golf. Designed by David Williams and build to USGA specification it
has some truly unique features including a double green that is
also a character at St Andrews, the home of golf.
We believe The Kingfisher is the best pay and play course in
Sussex. With each hole defined by long blond fescue grasses
it resembles seaside links courses even though it is in the heart
of Sussex.
A course plan
The 1st – KINGSHOTS (PAR 4, 376 YARDS, SI
5)
A tee shot on this dog-leg hole at the marker
post here is ideal, leaving a mid iron to a green guarded by a
bunker short and right of the green. Take note of the
distance, as this bunker makes the green look closer than in
actually is.
The 2nd – CINDERBANKS (PAR 3, 150 YARDS, SI
17)
A tricky par 3 golf hole. At a maximum
of 150 yards, the key here is not to go long. The bunker
short again deceives the player of the distance, making it appear
shorter than it is.
The 3rd – GREENSLADE (PAR 4, 331 YARDS, SI
13)
Fairway bunkers catch wayward drives, and
greenside bunkers catch short approaches. The huge double
green can offer interesting pin positions!
The 4th – OLDFIELDS (PAR 4, 336 YARDS, SI
11)
A classic risk/reward tee shot. Play
short of the fairway bunker leaves a long, blind approach to the
green, while the more aggressive of us (if successful) can pass the
bunker and leave a simple pitch to a long green.
The 5th – BURNT HILL (PAR 3, 155
YARDS, SI 15)
The view from this tee is one to behold.
That said, the tee shot is not. With a downhill approach to
the green, it plays shorter than the yardage. Pitch too far
short and you risk bounding through the green, left of the green is
out of bounds and right leaves a difficult up and down. The
prevailing wind will need to be taken into account.
The 6th – BARNSNAP (PAR 4, 427 YARDS, SI
3)
A long testing par 4 golf hole. Hug the
right hand side of the fairway to get in position for the second
shot to a very tricky green. A par 4 here is a very good
result.
The 7th - SGRAGGED OAK (PAR 4, 363 YARDS, SI
7)
A blind tee shot that will feed from left to
right upon landing. The second shot is played down the hill
to a two tiered green, taking care not to go long. Deep
bunkers protect the right side of the green.
The 8th – ROOSTHOLE (PAR 4, 398 YARDS, SI
1)
Another blind tee shot that needs to be aimed
over the middle of the three fairway bunkers, taking care not to
run too far into the stream that runs across the fairway. The
second shot is uphill and demands a good strike to get all the
way.
The 9th - THE HAMMER (PAR 5, 546 YARDS, SI
9)
The first of only two par 5 holes. A
drive at the marker post will set you up for two more solid shots
to the severely sloped green.
The 10th - HAWKINS CORNER (PAR 4, 375 YARDS, SI
6)
One of the prettiest holes that nature alone
defends. You will find no bunkers or water hazards here, just
an enormous oak tree in the middle of the fairway that can hamper
even the most accurate of drives. The green has a large slope
that runs through the middle, making some putts treacherous.
A par here means you have navigated this hole very well.
The 11th – KINGFISHER (PAR 4, 317 YARDS, SI
18)
A short par 4 that gives birdies as often as
bogeys. Four bunkers protect the fairway and the small green
is protected by one more.
The 12th – PAGES (PAR 3, 174 YARDS, SI
16)
A medium length par 3 that demands accuracy
once more. A deep green with many subtle slopes can fool the
players and bunkers left and right guard the green.
The 13th - DRAGONS LEAP (PAR 4, 438 YARDS, SI
2)
The second hardest hole purely down to its
length and the prevailing wind. A solid drive will leave a
long iron downhill to the green with two levels. A small
bunker guards the right of the green which cannot be seen from the
fairway. It’s up to you whether you reveal this to your
partners…
The 14th – SCYLLA (PAR 4, 398 YARDS, SI
4)
A long drive to the top of the hill will give
a good view of the green on this dog-leg. Don’t be too aggressive
with your tee shot as the range that runs parallel is out of
bounds.
The 15th – CHARYBDIS (PAR 5, 519 YARDS, SI
10)
A three shot par 3 for most. Avoid the
tree on the corner and lay up short of the three fairway
bunkers. This leaves an approach of around 150 yards to the
other half of the double green shared with the third
hole.
The 16th - SQUIRE PAULLETT (PAR 3, 187 YARDS, SI
14)
A long par 3 with a devilishly designed green
with three different levels. Only a straight, well struck
shot will be rewarded.
The 17th - ALLAN JONES (PAR 4, 340 YARDS, SI
12)
Another tight bunker lined fairway, which only
requires a long iron or fairway wood to set the second shot
up. Another tricky green with three different segments,
putting can be very tough.
The 18th - MICK MILES (PAR 4, 387 YARDS, SI
8)
A gentle enough par 4 to finish. A
straight drive is the order of the day, leaving a mid iron approach
downhill to another green with three different levels. A
large bunker protects the right of the green. A par will
leave you feeling very pleased indeed.
