Secrets
Famous names
Gary Player included the 11th hole of the Waterfall Golf Course
known as The Valley in his imaginary top 18 holes of golf in the
world.
On 4th May 1987 Severiano Ballesteros, Sandy
Lyle, Nick Faldo, Mark McNulty and Jose Maria Olazabal were
competitors in the Pro-Celebrity Tournament which raised £160,000
for the Variety Club in a single day… a world-record amount at that
time.
Full of history
Golf started around the town of Horsham in
1905 when a 9-hole golf course was built at Broadbridge Heath to
the west of the town. The original course at Mannings Heath
consisted of 18 holes and was laid out in 1914.
Famous links!
Our green fee only course, the Kingfisher has something in
common with the world-famous Home of Golf, St Andrews. The 3rd
and 15th holes on the Kingfisher use a shared kidney-shaped
green as the Old Course does.
War-time drama
We have an old propellor blade mounted on the wall above
the open fireplace in the Clubhouse Lounge Bar. This is a tribute
to the crew of the Halifax Bomber which crashed on the golf course
on 17th February 1945. Come and take a look!
A moment in time!
An extract from Committee Minutes from August
1928 reads… “It was decided to reply to Golf Illustrated that this
Committee were against the legislation of steel shafted clubs in
this country.”… I wonder what the committee would make of all the
very latest club technology today!
Intriguing history
Hawkins Pond, adjacent to the course, was
named after the leader of a notorious gang of 18th Century
smugglers who made their rendezvous, until they were caught and
hanged.
