Several of the holes are wonderfully testing, demanding accuracy from the tee. The first tee is set in the shadow of the gorgeous 100-year-old Clubhouse and has a spectacular prospect. From the elevated tee, a long and accurate drive over a wooded valley is the order of the day. The second is a very short par 4, but this comes too early in the round for most of us to take too much advantage.
The 5th is one of the most dramatic one-shot holes in Sussex with an elevated tee shot to a green set in a most unusual punchbowl. It heralds the beginning of a fine run of holes. In fact, it is the par 3 holes that really give The Waterfall its identity and The Punchbowl is the first of these delightful challenges with a stream to the side and the front of the green posing an additional challenge. The Blaster is the last of the short holes, with bunkers on the left closely guarding the green. The ground falls away sharply to the right into woodland and the approach to this is out of bounds.
Established in 1905, the Waterfall course, is the jewel in the crown of Sussex golf. The course is set amongst acres of mature deciduous woodland and streams with patchwork fairways. Due to the location in over 300 acres of rolling Sussex downs, the course a hybrid, a mix of heathland, downland and parkland and provides golfers with an exciting and entertaining course which holds the interest all the way round.
Indeed it is testament to the quality of this course that Gary Player included the 11th hole, known as The Valley, in his imaginary top 18 holes of golf in the world.
